SEW- A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

In ancient times, mankind used to stitch animal skins for clothing and shelter. Thread in the form of leaf’s or long fur fibres of animals after twisting and needle made of bone was used for stitching. Weaving of cloth, introduction of line, silk and cotton threads and sewing machine put the stitching to a new level. The

production of garments from tailor shop to mills started with industrial revolution.

Fabric and thread are two major elements of an apparel. To stitch the panel of fabrics together, thread is used. Sewing thread is a twisted ply yarn, which is treated with some finishes to make its surface resistant to friction and stresses when it passes through needle hole and material.

Sewing threads can be classified on the basis of type of fibre to be used, thread construction and finishes applied to the surface of thread. Threads can be manufactured form natural or synthetic fibres. Natural threads include cotton, linen and silk thread. Cotton thread is of three types: soft, glace and mercerized. Soft thread receives no special treatment other than bleaching or dyeing. Glace thread have a surface coating while mercerized thread is treated with caustic soda to produce thread with high lustre. Cotton thread have good sew ability, good dye take-up but low strength. Linen thread have good strength and stiffness than cotton. Silk thread have high extensibility up to which is an important factor adding to the strength of silk thread.

Soft threads have low elastic modulus, low friction, large residual strain and low rigidity while hard threads have high elastic modulus, small residual strains, high friction and rigidity. For high speed stitching, hard threads is a better option.

Needles can be dangerous, too. We can create wonderful garments using them, but chances are we will end up with our fingers all pinched and numb. Sometimes, our greatest

5 times before meeting the love of her life. Yes, the greatest things in life are not for free, but after we have sewn that beautiful evening gown we can look at our fingers and still think it was worth the pain.

Needles are just shiny, thin metal pieces that don’t say much by their appearance. I believe we can learn from needles to look beyond what we can touch. So many people out there get socially rejected and bullied for the way they look and no one realizes how great their personalities can be.

The threads used for designing a cloth is not only fashion related but also depends heavily upon weather. The quality of each thread when woven together gives us the comfort when we wear them. The ability to soak our body heat and cooling down our skin is given to us by the cotton threads. That’s the

power each thread generates thus making it special. The saliva of caterpillar are preserved to make one of the richest form of silk. Thus, thread acts a thread between fashion and environment.
